my own QGIS notes

1. use up-to-date version

on download page the OSGeo4W Network Installer was pointless.

The QIGS Standalone Installer Version 3.16 (64 bit) worked fine.

It installs to:

    C:\Program Files\QGIS 3.16\

and exe is:

    C:\Program Files\QGIS 3.16\bin\qgis-bin.exe

I made shortcut on desktop.

2. create project with OSM layer

Browser -> XYZ Tiles -> OpenStreetMap -> Add Layer to project

3. QGIS location

new proposal: all qgis projects, data, & layers will be in:

        /home/wendell/gis/qgis

4. tracon shapefiles

• retrieve the "official" version (which has everything all in one file)

    cd ~/gis/qgis
    scp wendell@carrotseverywhere.com:cssi/tracon_shapefiles.tgz .
    tar zxvf tracon_shapefiles.tgz

./Sector_usa+Tracon.cpg
...

and use 'Browser' tree selector to choose/open "Sector_usa+Tracon.shp"

• select

use "Select Features" (3rd toolbox row) to select tracon (it will be yellow)

• write out

rmb -> Sector_usa_Tracon (layer name ) -> Export -> Save Selected Features as ...
